Falcon Street pedestrian and cycle facilities

The Falcon Street pedestrian and cycle facilities were officially opened by the NSW Minister for Roads, Michael Daley, on the 17th of August, 2009. These facilities improve safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists crossing the Warringah Freeway near Falcon Street.

RTA vision

The RTA initiated the Falcon Street pedestrian and cyclist facilities project in response to submissions from the North Sydney Council and Cammeray and Neutral Bay community groups.

The facilities include:

Under construction: night works on the Falcon Street facilities.

  • A shared pedestrian/cycle bridge, 220 metres long and three metres wide, over the Warringah Freeway between Falcon Street, North Sydney and Merlin Street, Neutral Bay.
  • An underpass at the eastern side of the Warringah Freeway.
  • A shared ramp at the eastern side of the existing Ridge Street pedestrian bridge for cycles, wheelchairs and prams.

Falcon Street pedestrian and cyclist facilities and the local community

RTA projects are designed and undertaken with a strong commitment to local communities. The Falcon Street pedestrian and cyclist facilities development process included extensive community consultation. This ensured that needs identified by the local community became part of the project’s goals. The RTA worked to ensure that any adverse impacts of the project were minimised. The RTA thanks nearby residents and councils for their patience during the construction of the facilities.

Consulting local communities

In July 2006 the RTA established a community focus group for the Falcon Street pedestrian and cycle facilities project. The focus group comprised residents, representatives from local community groups, Bicycle NSW and North Sydney Council.

This focus group:

  • Provided input to the project option selection process.
  • Disseminated information on the project to the wider community.
  • Provided feedback on the review of environmental factors surrounding the project.

Following the consultation process and subsequent design phase, details of the proposed option for the pedestrian bridge and underpass and a review of environmental factors were displayed from 22 November through to 20 December 2006. At that time, the community was encouraged to comment on the proposal. More than 100 submissions were received.

After receiving additional input from North Sydney Council, two additional access ramps were incorporated into the project; one to the existing Ridge Street pedestrian bridge and another at the southern ascent of the Falcon Street underpass.
